The problem

Two doors stand between you and your dream job.

Every employer’s desk works the same way: scan, decide, call or discard. A resume that isn’t loaded with skills and accomplishments goes straight in the trash.

Door 1: Resume

High competition. A well-written, well-matched resume projects a professional image and cuts the competition down.

→

Door 2: Interview

Lower competition. The same strong resume raises your interview rate once you’re in the room.

→

Your dream job

Reached by writing for the reader: communicate your path, don’t just list fancy titles.

What you’ll be able to do

Leave the workshop with a resume that works.

01

Pick what’s relevant

Identify the information that matters for one particular application and drop the rest.

02

Prove your suitability

Back claims with quantified achievements, such as “managed a team of 10 programmers.”

03

Format with confidence

Choose between chronological, functional and combination styles, then lay it out so it’s easy to scan.

04

Express yourself clearly

Write crisp, active, jargon-free copy with the keywords that get past the scanning process.

Inside the guide

Five parts, one complete method.

Start with how employers read, then build every resume section, choose a style, write it step by step, and finish with a cover letter.

  • Part 1 — How employers select, and resume communication
  • Part 2 — Every section, heading to references
  • Part 3 — Resume styles and formats
  • Part 4 — Getting started to online resumes
  • Part 5 — Cover letter writing and final points
  • Appendix — Samples, worksheets, skills database, templates

Part 2 covers every section

HeadingContact details done right
ObjectiveA focused job objective
SummaryYour match statement
SkillsEvidence, not adjectives
ExperienceRoles and responsibilities
AchievementsValuable accomplishments
EducationQualifications that count
GapsDisguising employment gaps
A taste of the advice

Small rules that change how you read.

1Keep it to one page, two only if absolutely necessary.
2Use action verbs like “developed” and “managed”; leave out the “I.”
3Avoid passive phrasing: “Managed” beats “was responsible for managing.”
4Skip age, height and marital status; they’re irrelevant here.
5Proofread. Easily preventable errors ruin first impressions.
The appendix

Samples, sheets and templates.

Learn from worked examples, then fill in your own.

Appendix AChronological sample
Appendix BFunctional sample
Appendix C–ECombination samples
Appendix F–GSelf and skills evaluation sheets
